Widespread Panic 2013 Panic En La Playa in Review (Backup)

DO NOT EDIT!

Notes from Panic Freaks:

  • what i got in my pocket is gonna blow your mind
  • STop braking down: what i got in my pocket is gonna blow your mind
Love tractor: mom said... Moms are alright

  • Space wrangler: skol! To Another cold beer.... Bartender put some rum in there!!!!!
  • Flying, Trying, Flying, Trying  (Walkin')
  • Night 4 The encore was completely disjointed and there were some technical problems with jb's guitar, but you know what fuck it. Everyone had a great time and if the band was partying or just got flustered or whatever who cares. The band was smiling the whole time at all 4 shows (except the rain during night 3) and really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jb looked like a dog with his head out the window he was smiling so much with the wind blowing his hair.
  • oh and the hookers were 300 and did NOT take resort credits unfortunately. I've never seen so many bored hookers in my life. I did see one older fella who was spun cornered on a couch by two of them.
  • We won the tournament. I'm still trying to track down my trophy. My buddy sent me a text saying that they just picked theirs up at the Clound 9 table and when I got down there 15 minutes later the table was gone and no one from Cloud 9 was anywhere to be found. Hopefully they'll send it to me.
  • A score of 61
The course was awesome! Great layout with pretty wide fairways. We had a double eagle on #6. Shot a 61.

Something Special:

  • The 9pm Soundcheck rumor is true, and about a thousand early-birds are treated to 'Surprise Valley' and 'Bust it Big'
  • Hard Rock Hotel: Friendly and accomodative staff... The resort- Holy fuck this place was huge., I have never been so lost in my entire life. every building looked the same. by day 2 I had somewhat found my bearings and started using the wifi from the buildings to figure out where I was. The wifi was terrible and almost impossible to get in touch with anyone on the voxer app but that just made it more fun. You probably walked 50 miles without knowing it.
  • Positive Legacy Auction: Raised over $30,000 from the sale of a signed Washburn guitar ($18,500), Autograph picture from Red Rocks ($4,500), There was an autographed pic of the band from red rocks with all the members swapped sides that went for 4500 in the charity auction. The guitar went for 18k.
  • No big bustouts neccessary... just a whole lotta covers (8 each night) and classics (Average song vintage: 1992) and just 6 post-Mikey originals played.
  • The Stage is decorated with 2 large lizard prints on either side and the 'Panic En La Playa' insignia overhead, designed specifically for the event by poster artist Jeff Wood.
  • Sound Engineer Dros's House music mix includes Rock Steady, Give Me Everything, Stone Free, War Pigs, La Grange, Blind... and an ass-shaking Baby Got Back.
  • While the wifi-signal is spotty on the beach, Zman's plugged into the soundboard and streaming the monitor mix live, and Coloartist is broadcasting the shows uninterrupted 30 minutes after showtime
  • Peeing in the ocean during the show
  • "Talking to Jimmy in the airport before we left followed by all the fans clapping and cheering when the band was coming down the stairs on their way to security! Basically everybody standing in the airport security line (maybe 500+ people) erupting in a huge cheer and applause when JB, Schools, Jimmy, etc walked into the area was kinda priceless, too. "
  • In the airport, my friend told schools he rocked it this week and Schools responded, "Yea I broke 2 guitars and blew an amp, I'd say so."
  • "Chewbacca wearin' his coat in the middle of the summertime.
  • When folks aren't peeing in the ocean during the show, Rod Stewart is watching in every bathroom.
  • Drink of choice: Presidente, Dirty Monkey, Miami Vice, Mamajuana,
  • Last meal today at Isla. The waiter said he had been working at the resort for four years and that the past four nights had been the BEST parties he had ever seen there. He said you people are all sooooo nice and soooo HAPPY. And he said he made the most money he had ever made there. Good work good people. Proud to be a panic fan
  • wait I have one more complaint. the checkout process. We had 4 people and only recieved on checkout ticket and almost missed out flight because no one said we needed it to get on the bus so I had to butt in front of 900 people and get another ticket. Same thing happened to a few others on our bus, one guy had security called on him because he refused to get off the bus and get a ticket. I know it was a lot of people checking out but seemed like there could have been a better way to do it.
  • On the flight from Punta Canta,I was sitting in front of Dave, and overheard his brief conversation with the stewardess. He asked if they were giving her a hard time, she says no and something that I couldn't understand and Dave replied, that's because we did our job and wore them out. I concur Dave, and thank you very much.
  • Rumors of next year are swirling already, with another go at Punta Cana, a new place like Costa Rica, or perhaps another Hard Rock venue in consideration... same time next year.
  • Cut the wristband > return to reality

And there's a little sunshine, startin' to peak through the leafless trees. Slidin' down, down, down the rooftop like children on a Sunday afternoon. Rays coming through the window through the words on the window, restin' against my coffee cup keep me warm a little longer as I feast on Miss Lee. Hangin' in the light, hangin' in the light. Something Special:

  • Announcement from Coloaritst: Per Coloartist >>> I will not be streaming anymore from the beach. If I can't get enough stable internet it puts out a subpar stream. It makes your listening painful and my show staring at a laptop. Post show stream will start 30 minutes after the show is over. http://www.coloartist.com/live-streams/
  • Announcement from Zman: Good morning folks! Checking in. Night I was a bunch of fun. After Annabel lead us through our welcome toast where she exclaimed "Never miss a Sunday Show" , the crowd was pumped! The music is one thing, but being around 3,400 "friends" really is where it's at. The band once again as they did in Playa I, offered us to do a stream utilizing the soundboard feed. My partner in crime was Dany as usual. Getting connected, and secondly staying connected was a tough task. Bennett was in the same boat as he worked feverishly to stay connected to provide a stream as well. We all cheer each other's efforts on in hopes we can keep the music flowing. It can get frustrating.
We will give it another shot tonight. The show started at 8:05 last night, which is 7:05 Eastern time. Tune in. Unfortunately, there was no way to get on the chat so we could not monitor. Curtis from kept us informed during the first set. Rayner, if there are any problems, I guess you can text him and he can get in touch with us.

ustream.tv/channel/zzzstreamNo introduction, repeat of the 12/31/2012 opener with Last Dance... JB lets out a primal scream and mentions the ocean...
  • No Instrumentals
  • Much more relaxed band shows up tonight...
  • 'No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature' gets the Wood Tour treatment, with the guitar licks for an intro and in between, and is placed before 'Space Wrangler' for the 3rd time, a switch position for the classic pairing
  • 'Good People' void of 'Dark Bar' for the second time in a row
  • One Kind Favor LTP
  • Good People Trainwreck
  • Jam out of Space Wrangler
  • Bombastic North outro jam with hints of Space Wrangler
  • "on cue, quick, rainfalls during blue indian and (and the next night for driving) really stand out to me"
  • Dueling guitar solos between Jimmy and JB during 'One Kind Favor'
  • Schools chasing Jimmy up the fretboard during 'Holden Oversoul' > Stop Go for a classic pairing
  • House Music: Dr. Feelgood, Baby Got Back (I Like Big Butts)

  • 'Just danced in and did a few tricks, stamped out again' during-Holden Oversoul
  • 'Used to ride the highway, used to know where we were going. Highway not finished, so this old road's feelin' cool beneath my feet. Used to ride, get to where we're going in a day. Oh, sometimes we stop and go along the way' during-Stop Go
  • 'Rise in the morning, sun is shining. Oh, there three little thoughts on my window. Some singin', lately pure and true. Mostly the only thoughts I'm lettin' slip through. Sun is shining, weather is sweet. Make you wanna put on your dancin' feet. One good thing about music, don't need no thinkin' at all. No, no, no no thinkin' at all. One good thing about music, when it hits you feel alright. One good thing about thoughts, is letting go. Don't worry about a thing. 'Cause every little thing is gonna be alright. Sayin' don't worry about a thing. You know everything is already, already, already, alright! Was a fool wastin' time, searching my mind. The less you pick around the more you got the time to re-lax. Used to like to get to where we're-supposed-to-think-we're-gonna-be-one day-in-a-day. Like a cock in the morning, gotta strut and crow, strut and crow. Strut and crow! Along the way...' during-Stop Go

I'm flyin', for your love. I'm flyin', for your love, I'm flyin'... for your love. Afraid to look in your eyes. Afriad you might look down to me. I'm afraid to look down at the ground. All I wanna do is fly with you, child' during-Walkin' (For Your Love)
  • 'Goodnight ladies and gents, thank you very much!' after-Tall Boy

  • 'Alright, everybody holdin' it together? Ha! Well let's fix that' before-Ride Me High
  • 'You won't believe my love, baby... oh, I'm gonna be on you tonight' during-Ribs And Whiskey
  • 'Every time I'm walkin' down the beach, causin' all my blues' during-Stop Breakin' Down Blues
  • 'The stuff in my trunk baby, aww make us lose our minds. Aww, granny in the back seat on the way to church. I said, Grandma you mean you ain't a lurch? Over there drinkin' hard water! Ya even do the shimmy she-bop. Aww, hold that for a second, grandma... aww...' during-Stop Breakin' Down Blues
  • 'Granny get out the car, she do a little shimmy-she-bop... Oh, like she got rabbit in her skirt... I said, she can't stop... stop breakin' down! Aww, granny stop breakin' down. The stuff in this jug here, make you lose your ears and your mind' during-Stop Breakin' Down Blues

I remember Hatfield's mama - big ole beautiful lady! I like big mamas and I don't know why. Hatfield's mama, she was a German lady, used to make her own beer back in the day.
