Show Reviews:
- Some meat-n-potatoes Panic will kick-start Fall Tour at the Orpheum in Beantown! However loud and hot, the band is mighty comfortable navigating between the opening ‘Holden Oversoul > Knockin’ ‘Round The Zoo’, returning to form with a composed ‘Diner’ outro jam before revisiting Jimmy Herring’s first suite with Widespread Panic performed on this day 5 years ago; that dark minor jam into ‘Pleas’. The second set comes barreling through the darkest of originals, and even a couple monster sandwiches! A refined lullaby jam out of ‘Shut Up and Drive’, ‘Blight’ sandwiched between ‘Driving Song’ just like its FTP in 1995, and JB tapping his cup, signaling for a refill while Sunny and Todd introduce a nimble slam into ‘Fishwater' add to the set’s intensity. With nothing left to prove, John Bell thanks the crowd for “helpin’ us get all loosey juicy” before the first of many encores to come. (Listen to 09/15)
- A bass-driven groove prior to ‘Imitation Leather Shoes’ commences Friday night’s festivities, and heavy hints of ‘Immigrant Song’, roaring feedback, rolling drums, and blistering solos set an exploratory tone. Some of this summer’s most exploratory numbers like ‘Who Do You Belong To?’ and ‘Proving Ground’ make a showing before Dave Schools introduces the first guest of the tour to help close the set out with ‘Rebirtha > Blackout Blues.’ New Orleans native and low brass mastermind; “you know him, we love him - Trombone Shorty.” What a rarity it is having a guest musician return for the second set, with bodies dance en masse behind the heft of a ‘Pusherman’ not seen in 88 shows! Closing out with another treat, ‘Good Morning Little School Girl’ returns to the song list after 75 shows, leading into a ‘Chilly Water’ that's played with extra funk and swagger. (Listen to 09/16)
- We hope you Brooklyn show goers aren’t caught off guard by the closing of the L train and an early start down on the East River. A slew of curfews, ordinances, and restrictive “beer jails” shouldn’t hinder the luster of NYC’s skyline opposite the stage and Panic in mid-tour form just three shows in! The band acknowledges the surrounding scenery with an atmospheric ‘Chainsaw City’, Jimmy Herring leads a windup jam out of the trendy pairing of ‘L.a. > Jack’, and digs into an everlasting note on ‘Papa’s Home’ to end the set. The ultimate second set overture, ‘Disco’ matures into a sinewy ‘Tie Your Shoes’, and after a pretty unreal ‘Rock’, the hits keep coming. Let JB put on some records, take you upstairs and get LOUD on a ‘Bowlegged Woman’, quoting ‘Stop Breakin’ Down Blues’ before a ‘Use Me’ rap for the ages. Steal a glimpse of the wicked smiles on stage before the first inverted/split ‘Sewing Machine’ that transitions into ‘Under The Radar Jam’, with a miniature reprise inviting on the ‘Protein Drink’. With cups in the air, the heavy drop from ‘Slow Porch’ into ‘Junior’, sandwiched between ‘Surprise Valley’, is one hell of a way to make out in Brooklyn. (Listen to 09/17)
- After a beautiful day off in Richmond for the band and crew, The National Theatre will play host for the next three nights. With ten songs not played in as many shows on tonight's setlist, tonight's packed house will journey deeper into the catalog. The impeccable sight-lines give attendees the chance to witness John Bell rapping ‘Whip Your Hair Back And Forth’ during a wonderfully psychedelic ‘Last Dance’, a few silky transitions pulled from the past, like ‘Airplane > Second Skin > Goin’ Out West’ from this Summer’s Cynthia Woods show, and ‘Stop Go > Cream Puff War > Stop Go’ ala Milwaukee, 2009. The red spotlight pointing at Dave Schools’ during his lead-in jam swings toward the balcony to highlight a few special guests in attendance for his homecoming performance, and an entirely old school second set penetrates the halls before the conclusion of 'Pilgrims > She Caught The Katy'. (Listen to 09/19)
- Prepared to prove their worth again tonight, 'Let's Get Down To Business, Makes Sense To Me > Better Off' get's the musical conversation going! Opening with a hat-trick of quintessential songs from the Houser era has been an emerging trend over the past 5 shows. Highlights from the first set include a beautifully rendered 'Driving Song' sandwich, with Jimmy and Dave ringing every bit of juice out of a 'Born On The Bayou' lick after 'Hatfield', and 'Breathing Slow' leads into 'Stop Breakin' Down Blues' to complete the sequence. Set two takes flight during a stretched out 'One Kind Favor' with hints of Black Sabbath's 'Electric Funeral' and a massive 'Blues For Allah' tease before 'Drums', before exploding into 'I Walk On Guilded Splinters', with JB whispering the intro like from the days of old, and flat out abusing his guitar! After a quick encore break, the music surpasses the three hour mark with a triple encore, 'Trouble, Gimme > Use Me', sends the crowd reeling back to their respective places for the night. (Listen to 09/20)
- The National comes to life for the final night, and no, that's not
"booing" you're hearing, but "Schooooools" rumbling from his hometown
crowd each time he hits the stage! Noteeaters are spinning across the
backdrop to the tune of 'Diner' as the show gets underway, and the
abundance of Richmond gems from the weekend continue shining, with JB
wrestling down a 'Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf' rap during
'Barstools And Dreamers', and last night's Sabbath tease blossoming into
a head pounding 'Fairies Wear Boots > Saint Ex', pushing into the
shows hardest direction yet. After a 'Nights In White Satin' jam out of
'Climb To Safety', and a high spirited 'Porch Song' set closer, the mood
is dialed down with 'City Of Dreams', before the closing electric blow
is delivered in the form of 'Postcard, Love Tractor.' (Listen to 09/21)
- Everyone headed to Raleigh for tonight's show is rightfully
concerned about a storm system, but as it turns out the weather man's
wrong, and the clouds part over the new Raleigh Downtown Amphitheatre
skies just in time for a raucous 'Pigeons' opener! Any foldout seating
has been cleared out to make room for the crowd, and the plan is to play
another original heavy first set. The band steals a look at a train
rolling by the stage during 'Travelin' Man', and they really lay down
the funk coming out of 'Pleas' in the first set. 'Fishwater' is a hell
of a way to start a second set, and we're all moving in captivity as the
band propels into 'Arleen', before tacking on the back end of
'Fishwater'. DJ Logic makes a guest appearance on 'Drums > Jam', and
'Genesis' satisfies the setlist enthusiest in us all! Add 'Surprise
Valley > Proving Ground, Ain't Life Grand' and 'Chilly Water' to this
first night in Raleigh and label that a huge success. (Listen to 09/23)
- The lights go down again for round two, and if last night was
full, the crowd is PACKED and ready to stomp some concrete in Raleigh on
a Saturday night. Taking a turn for some of the more exploratory
sections of the post-Houser era, this first set features brilliant
interplay during the 'Time Zones' outro, middle stretch of 'Henry
Parsons Died', the whole darn 'Sleeping Man', conclusion of 'Christmas
Katie', 'Radio Child', and of course, 'Junior'. After spinning a
setbreak set, DJ Logic invites the band out fora turntable lead 'Jam'
before Sunny vibrates the venue with his didgeridoo, and a tripped out
'Papa Legba' ensues before 'Red Hot Mama'. 'Pilgrims' undergoes an
inversion with the slow boiling ending jam cutting in before the intro,
'New Speedway Boogie' makes a very unexpected appearance, and hot-damn,
the throwback encore features a heart-attack inducing transition from 'Space
Wrangler' into 'No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature', leaving the crowd
foaming at their mouths before their set free in the streets. That's how
you close it down, boys! (Listen to 09/24)
- Who's ready for a mid-week, three night, sold out run at one of the most exquisite and intimate venues of this year, and a true heat receptacle of a venue - the historic Tennessee Theatre?! JB certainly is, taking notice of the house music and belting out "Express Yourself!" before a blistering 'It Ain't No Use' begins the show for the first time since Amsterdam, in '98. Juices are flowing right out of the gates, as the band climbs up a a staircase of notes in unison out of 'Stop Go' before launching into raw, '1x1' territory. Set two is like an improvisational stomping ground, with 'One Arm Steve' abruptly cutting into a balls to the wall, freestanding jam, and a ten minute, time warping 'Jam In D' after 'Flicker'. Even the security guards are breaking it down during a set closing 'Tall Boy', and 'Chainsaw City' grinds the gears down before the house music ques up 'Tennessee'. (Listen to 09/26)
- After
JB wishes the Knoxville crowd a good evenin', and announces that
they'll be our band this evenin', an upbeat and jammed out 'Holden
Oversoul' rattles around the domed ceiling and on down our spines,
setting the mood for what's slated to be a barn-burner. That special
something is in the air, and the time changes are cut in stone as they
navigate through a transitionless segue-way into 'Weak Brain, Narrow
Mind', tack on a 'Little Kin' outro jam to 'Gimme', and wedge the most
ridiculous 'Worry' in-between 'Bowlegged Woman', to close set one with
the first of many delicious sandwiches the band will be serving up
weekend... With all of the flawless playing in the second set, it's next
to impossible to pick a favorite stretch of songs. The setlist spells
out a 'Jam' out of 'Goin' Out West', 'You Got Yours > Sharon', and
'Tie Your Shoes > Walkin' (w/ Stop)', but fails to mention the
intangibles. A sublime Schools jam out of 'Aunt Avis', and the band
returning after 'Drums' with a full fledged jam of the 'David Essex'
cover - 'Rock On'! James Dean... With nothing left to prove at this
point, the first split 'Jack' appears in the encore, wrapping around
'Mr. Soul'. Epic. (Listen to 09/27)
- The band sure has made it easy to enjoy a three night run this
time around, and there's still room for a few more songs after last
night's top to bottom heat-fest, right? Jimmy Herring uses the final
stretch of 'Glory' to interject some emotion early in the set, before
the rhythm section show some teeth on 'Makes Sense To Me'. Jojo's in the
driver's seat tonight, banging out 'Visiting Day' and dusting off 'Help
Me Somebody' in a classic after classic first set, with the blue-eyed
soul of 'Angels On High' being the only exception. Unusually, the band
has decided to tighten the screws on five songs played just four shows
ago,
to go along with the rarities like 'Vacation', and 'Let's Get The Show
On The Road'. 'Travelin' Light' marks the end of a glorious three night
run. (Listen to 09/28)
- After a 500+ mile haul and an opening performance by 'Yonder Mountain String Band', the route of SEC Country reaches the sea of crimson at a spankin' new Tuscaloosa Amphitheatre. A portion of the proceeds from tonight's sold out show have been set aside for the city's storm recovery fund, and somehow it's been 15 years since the last show here?! The band prov soundtrack on this beautiful and breezy Friday night on the water, so please turn your cups up for the generous opening of 'Greta > Porch Song'! You never can tell what's going to happen at a Panic show, but the game plan for the first hour includes a radio-friendly set of songs to heighten the spirits. Never resting on their laurels, the middle segment of 'Climb To Safety' adds some excitement as it falls into a groove, setting the tone for a down and dirty second round. Kickin' the rock n roll back in gear with a few drinking songs - 'Ribs And Whiskey' and 'Tall Boy' get the crowd fired up while the band locks in on one of the most relentless stretches of the tour: 'Impossible > Chilly Water > Drums > Entering A Black Hole Backwards > Maggot Brain > Chilly Water > Surprise Valley > Pilgrims' to close the set - can ya dig it?! With the 'Roll Tide' chant in full effect, the band returns for the first bustout of the tour... and why not play what JB calls "a love song" for all the southern fried hotties in attendance? A heated 'Baby, Let Me Follow You Down', best known from Bob Dylan's debut album, makes it's first appearance after 353 shows, and they nail it! (Listen to 09/30)
- The buses make the four hour push back to Tennessee, and the invitation extended to enjoy Beale St. and join the band for Saturday's Bluff City show at FedEx forum. Lights go down, JB exchanges a pleasantry with the crowd before opening with a repeat from two shows back, and the psychedelic rumble of 'Saint Ex'. While the crowd isn't at capacity, it's one of the biggest sells this Fall, the floor is packed, and the unpredictable arena sound dials in, weaving heavily over the crowd! With the crowd in their hands, Jeff Austin is called up to play mandolin on 'Fixin' To Die', and to close the first set, everyone's treated to 'Ophelia > The Shape I'm In', a rare and well received suite courtesy of The Band. Hope you were able to catch your breath during setbreak, 'cause that other band has a marathon second set in store for ya! The crowd's reward for their energy is 'Machine > Barstools And Dreamers', some monster interplay out of a 'Junior' jam that was almost a song by itself, a truly rocking 'Ride Me High', and a serving of Booker T.'s 'Green Onions' during 'Henry Parsons Died', not played in 108 shows. Reserved for the encore slot is a heartfelt rendition of 'May Your Glass Be Filled', and yet another 'Life During Wartime' for the Memphis crew. (Listen to 10/01)
- The journey toward the Mississippi Coast Coliseum tonight is all the more welcoming set behind a pristine sunset. With the venue setup for theater seating in Biloxi tonight, and the stage set for the sixth time in seven days, the music is given some room to breathe. Adding to the show tonight are a couple of the Yonder Mountain String Band boys-Dave Johnston throws down a layor of banjo on C. Brown, and Jeff Austin again, this time on 'Who Do You Belong To?' Jimmy lends a delicate touch to the jam out of 'Breathing Slow', after a tasteful, uncut version of 'Driving Song'. The crowd's really whipped into a frenzy when a billowing 'Bear's Gone Fishin'' jam snaps into 'Protein Drink > Sewing Machine' to close out the set. 'Lawyers, Guns and Money' unexpectedly opens the second set, and a homely encore featuring a cascading, thirty-second note during 'Papa's Home', and John Bell, cozy as ever in his buttoned sweater, warming the souls out there with a wonderfully rendered version of 'Can't Find My Way Home'. (Listen to 10/02)
- It's safe to say that the low country has been a breeding ground for ripping shows, and with the road crew pulling up to the intimate Johnny Mercer Auditorium, Savannah will not be spared tonight. After greeting the crowd with a quick hello, the bar is set high with 'B of D > Bowlegged Woman' palpitating the floor boards to open things up. For those taking notes, sublimely jammed out versions of 'Bust It Big' have become the preferred lead-in to 'Mr. Soul', and that's Tuesday's third straight 'Gimme' of the tour... this one with a Grateful Dead influenced jam into a grungy 'Little Kin'. And of course, the crowds in Savannah are always ready for 'Red Hot Mama', and after the 'Love Tractor closer you could tell they didn't want to leave the stage--they crushed a first set! It's mighty hard to believe 18 years have passed since Savannah caught it's last 'Chilly Water', and in the same venue, nonetheless... and this second set will be a real treat. The crowd is riding up and down at the slap of Dave's wrist tonight, as he echos over the crowd to wind down 'Blight', commands the stage on 'Spoonful', and rumbles out a massive solo for 'Hatfield'. But the real 5th gear Panic comes out during the second 'Arleen' sandwich in a row, with JB taking the rap to a far-out place, and Schools spelling out the song title, wrapped inside an insane 'Tie Your Shoes', with JB calling out--"Love Your Squirrels!" Stream this show now! (Listen to 10/04)
- Couch Tour fans are pumped about tonight's live stream on the SiriusXM Jam_On station, and it comes as no surprise that the airwaves are calling for a feel good first set. And as expected, 'Up All Night' shows up in Savannah, but a wonderfully unique version develops-with a beautifully melodic stretch of improv. After the crowd gets a chance to catch the breath, and DJ Jonathan Schwartz spins The Disco Biscuits, Gov't Mule, Bob Marley, The Allman Brothers and Phish, the second set is slated to be such a jam machine, even Zman will struggle to split up the tracks! 'Imitation Leather Shoes' is taken to darker grounds when Schools dips into 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' for a lasting jam that leads into 'Mercy'. If that wasn't enough for ya, he bombs out a million and one funk lines between 'Aunt Avis' and 'Rebirtha', with an outro that flourishes into a song of it's own, and an 'Electric Funeral' jam makes a showing during 'Goin' Out West'. Closing out a hot set with 'Surprise Valley > Vacation > North' sets up a terrific encore--when 'And It Stoned Me' comes around after 99 shows, and 'Postcard, Makes Sense To Me' bids a proper sendoff to the low country. (Listen to 10/05)
- Next stop: Nashville, Tennessee! The recently opened Woods Amphitheater at Fontanel is a superb venue just far enough outside of downtown to remain convenient while providing seclusion. Security is down with a laid-back atmosphere amongst the wooded scenery, and the crowd come to life with the opening notes of 'Ain't Life Grand', before a down and dirty 'Cream Puff War'. Always a pleaser, 'Porch Song' highlights this short first set thanks to a maddening stretch of jamming that leads into 'Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys'. With plenty of fuel left for set two, 'Greta' begins the next classic set that features 'Pigeons', 'Airplane', 'Pilgrims', and 'Walkin' (For Your Love)-adding an oldschool feel to the well rounded setlist. And 'Sharon' comes as the encore on a one night stand once in a blue moon, and this one features Johnny Neel on keys! With his tough as nails vocals, JB delivers a mind blowing clinic of expression, and the night concludes with a rousing rendition of 'Walk On'. (Listen to 10/07)
- Widespread Panic returns to Alpharetta's well kept Encore Park on this gorgeous evening, and rest assured they'll blow it up as it's billed for one night only this time around! The parking lot breaks down, Futerbirds clear the stage after their opening set, and 'All Time Low' cranks things back up for an ATL crowd nearly 11,000 strong. The music is twisting in all the right ways tonight; the galvanizing onslaught of 'I Walk On Guilded Splinters' wakes up the crowd before they slide into conviviality to the tune of 'Christmas Katie'. And it's 'Henry Parsons Died' rocking into setbreak... Before ya know it, 'Machine > Barstools And Dreamers' signals the band's return. Talk about a dance party! It should come as no surprise that after its longest break of 113 shows, this loaded second set's 'Flat Foot Flewzy' is tonight's highlight. The mid-song, Pigpen rant and 'Turn On Your Lovelight' rap Dave uses to ignite the crowd gives credence to one of the wildest stretches of the tour! After that ovation, John Keane settles in for an emotionally charged collaboration, adding pedal steel to 'Don't Be Denied', and trading licks on the most sparkling 'This Part Of Town' of the past decade. 'Driving Song > Superstition > Driving Song > Breathing Slow', and the always-amusing, however high in rotation, 'Chilly Water', makes for a mind blowing ending run! Let's chalk that up as a night to remember... (Listen to 10/08)
- After Alpharetta's barn burner, the buses are heading back to Athens for a cross state jaunt and ultimate homecoming at the newly rebuilt Georgia Theatre. Widespread Panic is billed across the historic marquee for the first time in nearly 18 years, and not only will it be a gimmick-free recap of the songs they've been destroying over their 25th Anniversary, but a live HDNet stream benefiting Tunes For Tots and Nuçi’s Space. With the VIP party closed down, everyone lucky enough to score a ticket joins together in close proximity for a trip down memory lane. JB gives thanks to the crowd, "let's throw down for the childrens", and the pound ya over the head rhythm of 'Pigeons' leads us into the night. The sound in this rebuilt theatre and the family vibe is incredible, and the energy from the crowd is palpable during the ten song first set. Tunes For Tots setlists break from the rotation mold and allow heavy hitters from the past few shows to rotate back in, stringing together classics like 'Hatfield > Surprise Valley > Porch Song', with the middle of the segment featuring some monumental releases! The only departure from that formula is 'Sleepy Monkey' returning after 51 shows with a 'Shut Up And Drive Rap'. More of an ensemble performance with the band and those lucky enough to grab a next to impossible ticket in such close proximity. Set 2 begins with 'North' and they really blow through the final minute with a gut wrenching jam, and the gripping improv presses on during 'Bust It Big.' Athens native John Keane joins the band yet again, adding acoustic tones and haunting vocals to the second live performance of 'This Cruel Thing', and pedal steel on 'Blue Indian'. They effortlessly pace through the different time signatures of 'Diner > Vacation > You Should Be Glad'. Jojo feathers in hints of 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' before the final verse of 'Vacation', and they absolutely rip through the outro jam into 'You Should Be Glad'. 'Fairies Wear Boots' is dropped from the closing slot of the second set, which is a shame because when they return to the stage they must wait for the commercial break to air on HDNet. But at least it leaves room for the big, bad Brute encore of 'Expiration Day, Blight, Protein Drink > Sewing Machine'! (No stream available)
- We're beyond the midway point of the tour as the band steps into the Midwest leg at Murat Theatre with synchronicity on their side, to perform at one of the oldest and most loved buildings in Indianapolis. JB kicks off tonight's potential sleeper show with 'From The Cradle', and no doubt it's going to be a fun one on the tour... He even gets a little tongue tied on the second verse, when the "deep sex" line comes out as "big-cat keeps the copulation down [laughter]". 'Holden Oversoul' is up next, this time played with a soulful jam that capitulates into 'Stop Go', with a big, bold Jojo solo, and 'Time Waits' rap, formerly known as 'Body and Soul'. 'Proving Ground > Worry > Proving Ground' ends a solid first set with terminal velocity. Highlights of the second set include the return of 'Time Waits For No One' after 191 shows on the sidelines, a Rolling Stones song that debuted on Halloween in 2009, the trancy bop of 'Second Skin' preceding a 'Coconut' coming out of no where, sending the crowd up the walls! To spare any predictability, they go ahead and play 'St. Louis' the night before the St. Louis show, and after a pristine 'Pilgrims', 'Red Hot Mama' fires up the energy, and gives Jimmy Herring a chance to shine. For the encore, Schools wishes someone out there a happy birthday before 'The Last Straw'. (Listen to 10/11)
- The beautiful Peabody Opera House of St. Louis recently removed the chains from its doors after twenty long years, and the polished art deco joint will play host to tonight's shindig. After wishing the crowd good evening, they nail an old fashioned 'Space Wrangler' opener, and add a to the point 'Walkin' (For Your Love)' to keep the party going. 'Blackout Blues' is up next, with Jojo clanging away, adding to a colorful first segment. Dave Schools shoots off a smile and gives a baseball swing, signaling 'Rebirtha' for the Cardinals fans out there who are missing Game 3 of the NLCS. A fan even chucked his red Cards hat on stage! A nasty drop from 'Party At Your Mama's House' into 'Stop Breakin' Down Blues' concludes the first set, and re-entry hand stamps permit re-entry, so grab a beer during setbreak and hurry back for the next high-octane set... Nastiest build up in Tie Your Shoes... Smoking hot. Then Sunny drops a loop on the drums after Tie Your Shoes. The second set get's off to a jam-packed start, with 'Fishwater' another improvisational stretch during 'Up All Night', and an absolutely soaring 'It Ain't No Use'. A booming 'Entering A Black Hole Backwards' jam develops out of drums, leading into 'Chilly Water'. A thunderous bass lines and psychedelic synth tones signal 'Saint Ex'. The crowd is chanting "Let's go Cardinals" before the encore, and Schools shouts into the mic: "So we hear you guys got a pretty good baseball team" before launching into 'Ain't Life Grand'. (Listen to 10/12)
- Lions, Tigers, and Panic, oh my! The Fillmore congregation unites as 'Old Neigborhood' fills the halls with a funky, modulated baseline, the machine barrels along with a drum-roll transition before 'Papa Legba', and takes flight during a high spirited and absolutely filthy 'Greta' jam. The darkness of 'You Got Yours' gives way to an uplifting 'Angels On High', with a drum breakdown and a whole lot of blue-eyed soul. Thumping Conrad with absolutely explosive JB delivery at the ending. Detroit is the first show with songs that have all been played on Fall Tour. Jimmy lets his jazzy leanings shine in the 'Pickin' Up The Pieces' jam... 'Airplane' is treated to a megajam and In-A-Gadda_Da-Vida tease, with Jojo, Jimmy and Dave absolutely shredding. After an emotionally charged 'Aunt Avis', 'Fairies Wear Boots' follows... FUCK....YEAH.... Freewheeling, thunderous... Chainsaw City "detroit steel" line gets a nice reaction from the crowd before the encore break. Not a trainwreck but the band loses it a little in the closing moments of Her Dance. After 6 shows, the rollicking singalong Dead cover, 'New Speedway Boogie', is working itself into the rotation, and the crunchy groove of 'Makes Sense To Me' caps off . (Listen to 10/14)
- (Akron, OH) With a nearly sold-out crowd filing into Civic Theatre from Main Street, Akron's all fired up for its first Panic show! The crowd is packed in and nearly sold out in a beautiful venue, and tonight will be a special one for John Bell, who was brought up just 30 minutes north, around Shaker Heights and Pepper Pike. The soundman rolls back 'Just Kissed My Baby' from the house music, JB wishes the mid-west following a good evenin', and an out-there version of the anthemic Saturday night special; 'Henry Parsons Died', followed by a cooking 'Rock' provides a high-octane opening. Schools starts dropping those dirty bombs on the back-end of All Time Low that really gets the crowd going, and the whole band drips slowly into a 'C. Brown'. A sonically adventurous version of Bob Dylan's 'Solid Rock' concludes the first set. The hometown hero introduces a song by their buddy Vic Chesnutt, and 'Let's Get Down To Business' gets the second start off to a nice start... A gut-wrenching 'Let's Get The Show On The Road' materialises... LDW get's the crowd howling... Ripping, absolutely menacing jam envelopes the room after Flicker. Fucking smoke. Sunday show tonight and the second show in a row for Ohio! The show is about
half sold and intimate enough with room down front. With JB rockin’ the
backwards hat and that cool grey cardigan, you can tell the boys are in a mood
tonight and something special is coming! He greets the crowd with a “rock and
roll”, before launching into North. An interesting version of ‘Sleepy Monkey’
favors jazz over reggae during the jams, will tonight be the sleeper show of
the tour? The entrance between ‘L.a.’ and ‘Jack’ is sublime, and the jam during
‘You Should Be Glad’ is absolutely rambunctious. The rarities of the evening,
Vampire Blues, None Of Us Are Free first of the tour, Then JKMB & 4
Cornered (Firsts on the year)… Another long show, clocking in at just under 3
hours.(10/16)
- Check EC for the stretched out song selection. (Cincinatti show) 1200 people maybe. Awesome LA last night! Killer jam at the end...doing something fresh with a classic...me likey!! Soundchecked LA and made the 4th transition into Jack in a row, so that helped.. The whole show last night in Cincinnati was killer. Energized first set...Just Kissed My Baby and Four-Cornered Room, Vampire Blues, in the second...JB was animated! The "never miss a Sunday show" adage proved correct! (Listen to 10/16)
- Tuesday night at downtown Omaha's beautiful Orpheum Theater. While 'Glory' has been tough to catch since 1998, it finds itself as the show opener for the third time in as many months. After a knee-slapping 'Ribs And Whiskey', 'Bear's Gone Fishin'' forms a jazzy, fleeting jam that slowly rolls into the psychedelic sound of a 'Proving Ground'. 'Casa Del Grillo' returns after 80 shows in the dark,. SAY MORE HERE! The peak of the set comes during the 'Holden Oversoul' backend jam, closing the set on a high note. The second set opens with a jam-free version of 'One Arm Steve', followed by 'Pleas', with 'Third Stone From the Sun' harmonies played by Dave and Jimmy. 'Christmas Katie' ends with a 'Little Kin' jam in double-time, that leads into the song. A slow jam materializes out of 'Little Kin', lead by Jojo on Hammond B-3 and Jimmy. One of the better sounding shows of the tour due to the soundsystem (Listen to 10/18)
- There's no need for introductions as Panic descends on a thunderous Riverside Theatre crowd in Milwaukee, and the fall tour hot spot's setlist is stacked to rotate the goods in one last time before next week's tour closer in Chicago! JB's guitar does the talkin' with the opening notes of 'From The Cradle', which pauses before ripping into 'Bowlegged Woman'. 'Gradle' dials the mood back, but only for a moment, as Jimmy's guitar shines on the back half of an ascending solo. JB's really feelin' it during the back half of 'Little Lilly'. He screams to signal 'Tie Your Shoes', and 'I'm Not Alone', 'Up All Night', and 'Stop Go' with 'Three Little Birds' rap, and finally 'Knockin' 'Round The Zoo' to close out THE FIRST SET. What more could you possibly ask for?! How 'bout an adrenaline-laced 'Disco' to rip set 2 open... Extended Time Zones jam almost makes ya forget what they're playing!
- Just a week out from the tour closer in Chicago, perhaps the boys decided to stack the setlist tonight to bring hits like '' back into rotation one more time! The Riverside Theatre crowd is nearly as thunderous as the six headed monster always is on the first of a three night stint in Milwaukee! Highlights of the first set include an early 'Bowlegged Woman', the perfect transition between this tour's third pairing of 'Happy > Jaded Tourist', a nasty tail end jam on Little Lilly with JB screaming before Schools ushers in the rollin' and roaring 'Tie Your Shoes' bass line, 'Stop Go' with a surprise 'Three Little Birds' rap, the ripping extended 'Up All Night' jam, and Thursday's favorite song closing the set; 'Knockin' 'Round The Zoo'. They played 'Gradle', too.. what a first set! $4 PBR Tall Boys in the brew city make Blackout Blues the most appropriate choice to end the longest show of the tour on a satisfying note... but they're staying on stage... for 'Dear Mr. Fantasy'! (Listen to 10/20)

$4 PBR Tall Boys in the brew city make Blackout Blues the most appropriate choice to end the longest show of the tour on a satisfying note... but they're staying on stage... for 'Dear Mr. Fantasy'!
Fans have come to expect a ton of jamming and long distance sets in MKE, so the marathon tonight!

Review:
Damn glad I was in that building last night....what is it about Riverside and/or Milwaukee that leads this band to almost everytime out play stellar shows, lots of jamming, and extremely long sets??? This was another marathon like the Saturday '09 show.
From the Cradle always leads to good things, definitely glad when that started.
Holy shit the Happy > Jaded Tourist segue was perfect. Tourist has been one of my two favorite on DSD and this has to be its best version yet, hands down. Can't wait to relisten to that combo.
Always like a Little Lilly, and glad to hear TYS especially in first set since it's been 2nd set'd in 3 of my last 5 shows. Rest of the set stayed on fire, even Up All Night was ripping at the end. Stop Go > Knockin is always a good one, this was encore in Louisville earlier this year.
2nd set started hot, I thought it lost steam after Rebirtha for a bit and right before Chilly came out it was arleady like 50 minutes in, so was hoping for a long set and they delivered. Somehow that is my first chilly in awhile, (3 years maybe??) good shit. These guys were fucking jamming tonight.
Slipping is a great song. I like the lights they had going last night, not sure if different than what I saw at Wiltern in last show but they were solid. Solid though standard way to finish off 2nd set but place was rocking.
Encore speaks for itself. I was cruising back to Chicago right after and almost left half way through BB, thank GOD I didn't. Dear Mr Fantasy is a gem, and aside from being played this February its last time before was at Chicago Theater in '07, my lady's first show.
Great times in the Pit on Schools Side. Mike R, looked for you but no luck finding you??
Enjoy tonight y'all. Could only make last night and glad I did.

Lawd, had just a little gleam in his eye, swears his mother, and brother, and others. And I remember Charlie was my best friend. Oh, he is many other people's best friends, too. Aw, he just had that way. Even when we were little he'd come up with something funny 'bout me. He'd make jokes and shit, all we knew were like three words in our whole vocabulary. Yeah, know he always had the touch. Always had the touch. And I remember one Christmas he got this Little Mr. Science Project. It was raining and was hangin' in the kitchen. Left some, left some chemicals on to simmer and left it alone. Watch, watch, watch TV like the little ones do. It's called ADD now, now, now, now, then we just called it, it was good, something else was good somewhere else right there, and that's all it was. Oh now, steam came from the tea kettle. Lawd, Charlie said look at that! Aww, why don't we just put buckets and barrels for he who said kettles don't make the clouds rain. Rain for L.A.. Oh, rain for L.A.. Make the lands cry. Little cup of yesterday's coffee, not even hard yet donuts. I'ma help this man today. Aw, hey, Miss Lee. How'd things turn out for you? Guess not too much, but I still got time. Oh, baby I still got time. Aw, and this little ole shining through the trees. Coming to the window, grazing my breakfast. Aw, keep it warm a little longer. A little longer. Before I go, go Miss Lee. They're wound the way the want it, and the way it is. The babies don't know any words yet. Only care what the people feel. Words don't say what the people feel. Good morning little school girl, oh and good morning... Mr. school girl. I like your shiny smile and I like your shiny gun, too. Now, now, now, now I just happened to try a few things on. She like my taste in little things. Why does a rich man drink champagne, take half a beer and feel all the same. Why does a rich man drink champagne, take half a beer and feel all the same. BTD: Super slick transition between Holden and Knockin', almost like the song never changed! Jb takes a minute to let the band find a groove and dips into a very vocal 'Diner' rap. Big tease of something coming out of Diner with JB and Jimmy sharing a riff together. JB switches to resonator guitar. Ooozing into an extended 'Ribs and Whiskey' intro. Right at Jimmy's 5 year anniversary, we're back to his first song, that dark minor Jam into Pleas! Hefty jam developes into it's own little thing out of that, slippin' between the clouds and bringin' the 'Saint Ex' thunder. Dark, convoluted jam out of Bust It Big. JB Mumblin like a crazy man. Barstools with 'Satisfied' rap, An extended jam out of Shut Up And Drive. Just like the very first 'Blight' back in '95, it's the layer within the first of two big ole sandwiches back to back, placed between 'Driving Song' sandwich, except before going back into it they jam what sounds like Ride Me High, Red Hot Mama before sinkin' back into Driving Song. The second sandwich kicks off with a Perfect transition into > Fishwater, with a little drum interlude before sticking it. Clavinet funk before the North, and back end of Fishwater. Encore break "nothing left to prove at that point." JB is getting frisky, rambling on during the end of Worry to close the first set. They play a beautiful lullaby sounding segment out of Shut Up And Drive. Sounds rehearsed!
Quotes: "A lot of meat-n-potatoes Panic tonight" -Dale Murphy
Phantasy Tour: Good crowd and good beantown vibes.
JB was getting after it early. One image I would have love to see again is during Fishwater (?), JB with back to crowd, holding red cup in the air towards the side stage, tapping it for a re-fill, with Todd & Sunny drumming away.
Panic came on around 8:20, it's loud as shit, Go Upstairs for beer, they cut it off at 10:30pm, It was maybe 60% full, but hot as hell.

BTD: Show opens with a little jam that could definitely go the distance if developed, or maybe it was just improv, but there's a riff to it that the band attempts to get into. Jimmy throws in tease I've heard before right before Zman's 'jam' track out of the Imitation opener. It signals a heavy Immigrant Song bassline lead jam with plenty of feedback and rolling drums, and of course, blistering solos. What a stark contrast as it comes Rumbling into WDYBT? Some of the biggest exploratory songs from this Summer show up tonight, like Proving Ground! Todd getting down on the speed up before bringing it back home. JB thanks the opener, "Mr. Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue", before the intro of Cotton Was King comes slowly swirling in. A delicate little jam comes out of Little Lilly, easing in the tension before 'Walkin'. After Angels On High, Schools introduces the first guest of the tour: "You know him, we love him. Trombone Shorty" before the New Orleans 'Rebirtha'.
Trombone Shorty commanding the low brass lead lines during 'Rebirtha'. Quite the understated rarity to have a guest visit in two sets, but Trombone would be back out to summons the return of Pusherman in set #2.
Pusherman regains its gusto by a long break, Trombone Shorty, armed with his bone, dueling the band with the heft of Curtis Mayfield.
Quotes:
"Was in the mezz and that venue was getting down hard. Pusherman, followed closely by rebirtha and aint life grand, which was surprisingly huge."
"Schoolgirl > Chilly [is] maybe one of the most focused, least meandering versions of Schoolgirl Panic of any version has played. Like it a lot... And just as soon as things start to peter out....BOOM. Great little one-two punch there. Some VERY Houserian notes from Jimmy at the beginning of this Chilly... Wow, this Chilly has some swagger...different sort of funk jam in the middle...perhaps inspired by earlier play..."
nothing but smoke of a 2 night run in Boston. far exceeded expectations. pretty sure this was better than Asheville, the last pair of shows I saw.
Proving Ground was slaughtered - "this band is too big for this venue" - and left jaws on the floor. Ain't Life Grand was worth a bold - place was rocking out. I
Highlight of it all is Trombone Shorty. Wow. Dude would hang back getting the feel for the rhythm > look at JB > JB gives a nod > dude cuts loose > venue blows up > finishes solo, steps back with arms raised with the place going nuts and Jimmy & JB pointing to him - this is all while the song is still going on
Pusherman was one of the biggest dance parties I've seen in a long long time, that was some good shit right there.

BTD notes: Hope ya weren't caught off guard with the L train close and the early start tonight, down on the river starts around 6:45 due to the curfew. The L-strain is shut down tonight and due to state park ordinances, consumption of alcohol is restricted to beer gardens... but the good news is the skyline of New York City opposite the sage and Panic is in mid-tour form, ready to drop the heat on Brookyln! The trend of pairing L.a. with Jack continues, and Herring rips a nasty solo in the back end of Jack, before holding an everlasting note on a very solid 'Papa's Home' to close the set. Set two starts in classic form with Disco, then Tie Your shoes into a walloping, pretty unreal Rock, and Bowlegged Woman with JB takin' her upstairs, putting on his records, getting LOUD when he quotes 'Stop Breakin' Down Blues' and belts out a 'Use Me' rap. Panic is playing with the crowd, all smiles during the first inverted Sewing Machine, with a well oiled transition into 'Under The Radar Jam', the ending lick of 'Sewing Machine' and into 'Protein Drink'. Only the 3rd split of the Vic Chesnutt rocker and the first time Sewing Machine leads off. A Surprise Valley sandwich comes next with Slow Porch and the heavy drop into Junior in between.Wow, monster set!
Quotes: "That second set is absolute smoke... I can't fucking wait to stomp holes in concrete in Braleigh."
"Great show..amazing view...to much conversation and beer jail sucked"
"that venue is the definition of clusterfuckery. at least the sound was pretty good no matter where you were standing"
". I tend to have low expectations for the start of the tour, but was surprised with the caliber of playing out of gates. Looking forward to the things to come."
"Good venue in theory. But a cluster F of beer tickets, beers and beer gardens. F'ng packed too. I heard we can add one more venue to the mythical "record breaking ber sales" list? Missed most of 1st set, but settled in very nicely for the 2nd. Wow, great end to end set. Bowlegged and Rock are my highlights, lots of thick gooey widespread panic in there. I thought they could have dragged out porch a little more, but that was a great sight - cups in the air, city all around us, and panic in the air. Cool outro work on surprise, thought a postcard or even all time low would have worked wonders right there, but zero complaints after that show and 3 nights.
This band is making A+ shows the norm right now."
"Second set fucking SMOKED. Rock was huge. JB was VERY loud during Bowlegged, and the Use Me wrap was just awesome. I don't like St. Louis, but it was actually welcome tonight. They knew they were playing to an exceptionally spun crowd it seemed, and the gentle break came at the perfect time. Same with the slow Porch Song. Incredible show. Last night they were very much feeling each other out. Seems like tonight they locked in. Once they're able to hunker down for 3-days in Richmond, they're just going to be on fire.
09/19/11 The National, Richmond, VA
(Beautiful day off in Richmond)
Rotation Notes: 10 songs with double digit LTPs.
BTD's notes: JB flubs lyrics but recovers with a solid JBism during Space Wrangleer. Crazy is wonderfully done, Airplane has a huge jam before the night gets really heavy with another Second Skin, into the only true cover of the second set: Goin' Out West. Second set opens up with Heroes and an impossible with some really deep, dark jamming. JB still wrapping on 'Whip Your Hair Back and Forth' during 'Last Dance'. Huge build in this one and some wonderfully psychedelic play.
A block away at the Marriott hotel there is a SWAT trade show and training seminar going on until the end of the week. The place is already crawling with coppers from other states and Richmond's finest is already posted up with a mobile command center.
If you're gonna do something stupid, don't do it in or around the Marriott.
Fear and loathing in Richmond. That is all.
National, top notch venue. Great sight lines everywhere and never issues. 10 songs not played in over 10 shows. The 2nd set won’t quit tonight. Bell botched the first verse to Space Wrangler and the band never really recovered the rest of the song. The crowd went wild when the first few notes to goin' out west were thrown down. Great set closer.
First set takes a blurb out of the Cynthia Woods setlist from this Summer, with ‘Airplane > Second Skin > Goin' Out West’, and also the first night in Las Vegas with Second Skin* > Goin' Out West*.
Second set was an endless jam session. 9 songs back to back with cream puff war and ride me high as highlights. Give closed out the set with a bang. The boys came back on for a pretty solid encore. (I love She Caught the Katy). I would say Richmond night 1 was a solid B to B+. I hope the crowd was just holding out for tonight and tomorrow night because there were only a handful of people really raging. RICHMOND-- MAKE SOME NOISE
Sold out, unreal, rowdy crowd. Stop-Go > Cream Puff War > Stop-Go, ala Milwaukee 2009 (11/21) with a flawless transition out of Cream Puff War. Serious business in the second set is a developing trend with 4 shows down: heatfire in the second. Papa’s tease before I’m not alone?
You Got Yours was worth the price of admission. They seem to like playing it in Richmond
With The red spot illuminating DAS, Paul put the spotlight on the Schools family in the front of the balcony during his solo in the second set.
A rare She Caught The Katy in the encore slot (3rd finisher)
kaustin review:
We were treated to what felt like an old school first set, once again with some solid jams in the songs and segues. The intro to C. Brown seemed to linger in spirals before finally dropping into the song. They rocked the fuck out of Radio Child! Dyin Man isn’t what it was back in the early 00’s and was well played.
True To My Nature, well I am sucker for anything that has the fingerprints of someone from Bloodkin on it. Right back into the old school Wrangler, JB skipped the first line and immediately recognized his mistake. I think that if a live album comes out of this and Wrangler is included there will be some overdubs, nothing against that.
Crazy is another strong one for Jimmy. It provides a great little spot for his jazz improvisation and this one features a nice little jam.
Airplane, another blast from the past. Although I have caught Jimmy playing it with the band, this one arguably featured Jimmy playing too many of those flurry of notes. There were rocking parts but then he hits that flurry and it doesn’t always gel. I will say that he and everyone is a lot more aware of each other on stage and Jimmy has really eased back on relying on that flurry of notes just to fill a part of a void. Instead he is focusing a few notes or chords that fit with what the rest of the band is doing. The palying has come a long way from 02 and these guys are getting it.
Second Skin>Going Out West provided some nice improve into an all out rocker.
Set II, well HOLY SHIT! If the first set was feeling Old School this 2nd set more or less is pure Old School. It demonstrated just how well Jimmy has studied and learned the music.
I’m not going to go on and on about this set but to say it was fucking awesome. However, the Wooooos during Last Dance are about the lamest fucking thing since glowstick wars. Let's get really folks. Hooot and Hollarrrr during Love Tractor, scream Tall Boy but for the love of anything sacred don’t fuck with Widespread Panic’s take on Neil Young’s Last Dance. Rant over, this set fucking rocked.
The encore was quite a pleasant surprise. Pilgrims is one of my favorite WSP songs and Jimmy plays it damn well. She Caught the Katy brought back a lot of memories from Mikey’s last show. Mind everyone that I have been reflecting on 17 years of seeing this band am about to hit a landmark show.... if I can make this damn trip 2 more times. Pilgrims and Katy was a great way to end the show…the drive back to DC was not nor was the 2 hours of sleep I got before just fucking it and getting out of bed early to go to work.

Rotation Notes: More of the deeper cuts, 11 songs this time with over 10 LTPs, Electric Funeral jam, Blues For Allah between Schools and Jimmy.
One kind favor was definitely a highlight being on the rail the whole night. The jam rcy out of mercy was huge with schools, Jimmy and jojo all taking respective solos. The drum and bass>guilded was probably the most memorable segment for me. Guilded started off with jb whispering the opening lines reminiscent off early versions, it housed quite a huge funk segment that has been lacking in normal Jimmy versions. It was fun to see DAS lay it down during B of D especially being the schools zone. After they came out for the second set with tallboy and can't get high I was skeptical of how the flow of the set would be, but once they started mercy they really got locked in a groove and didn't let up.
First set highlight were definitely the hatfield, as well as the jam that ensued. Dave and Jimmy were both quoting born on the bayou before the second half of driving, and they also laid down some more funk. I was also very happy to see JB rock the black washburn during stop breaking down, which he was obviously feeling good about. I am also always excited to hear the original outro for driving in breathing slow, JImmy really does love playing it and it shows.

Apparently no easing off the gas on night two, as the boys open up with an oldschool start.
Highlight:
After a Stop Go sandwich last night, why not Driving > Hatfield >
Driving > Breathing Slow tonight! One Kind Favor, beyond sick, JB
and Jimmy were just laughing and waiting for Schools to get back into it
before going completely off. The guilded was by FAR the most out of
control version, with John whispering the intro lyrics. Huge jam out of
Mercy. 'Born On The Bayou' tease out of Hatfield and back into 'Driving
Song'. JB black Washburn during Stop Breaki'n Down. Jimmy and DAS
riffing on Blues For Allah between One Kind Favor and Drums.
Bam, the 1set starts off with a real old school feel again. The formula seems to be play some older Houser era tunes (3 to 4) before dropping into something new. The band played these songs quite well. I thought this was the most exploratory, adventurous and improvised 1set of the run. Mind you I am saying the 1set. It was great!
I often feel like Fixin to Die is too often a go to cover song for guests to sit in on. However, seeing the band play this version without guests and in a rocking fashion left me feeling excited.
The rest of the set is just fucking awesome. Classic WSP, Driving Song and Hatfield are two of my favorites. The Jam out of Hatfield was phenomenal. Breathing Slow was a surprise and obviously pointed to the band having another song in the set, which led into a great version of Stop Breaking Down.
Set II kicked off with some short straight to the point songs. Interesting since I thought the 1 set was so jammed out. But the 2nd set proved they were getting down to business. Mercy is where things started to get really out there, I mean that in a good way. I was at the last HOB Myrtle run so the band has definitely redeemed themselves in my eyes with this version. Dark, nasty, deep, emotional, intense are few words that come to mind.
North is a rocker, they have really transformed this song since the early 00’s
One Kind Favor, HOLY SHIT! Has this song morphed into some heavy psychedelic shit. I remember this song from the Mikey days as being sort of short and to the point. The versions from 00 in Vegas and Warfield didn’t really get out there, granted they were sandwiched in Chilly. This was a dark, drawn out version with some great improv and Black Sabbath teases, HELL FUCKING YEAH! Sunny was getting ready to go into drums pounding on those congos and Schools looked over at JB like WTF? So he just starts pulling and slapping on his bass strings which brought Sunny out of drums and they rocked on for a few more minutes.
Here is my confession after that dark and deep stretch of songs and then they started drums, well…. I had to leave. I had a 2 hour solo drive back to DC to get up at 5:45 and it was already 10:45. I made this move so I could hopefully hit the 3rd night. The whole time I drove back I just thought they better not play Fairies Wear Boots (the one song I have been chasing in the post-Mikey era). The move paid off. I got home and about 4 hours of sleep then work.
The rest of the setlist looked sweet and I can’t wait to hear it. I had seen Mikey play those songs with the exception of DWLY. I had also seen George and Jimmy more or less play all of those songs I missed too. Yeah, was it painful to walk out of this show early, absolutely but I felt so much better the next day. I also left after seeing some bad ass fucking shit so I was HAPPY!
I should also mention that I am stone cold sober during the Richmond run.

No, the crowd hasn't been booin', but Schoolsin' each time he hits the stage, getting the hometown love he so deserves. kaustin review:
Well, this is my 200th show almost 17 years to the day (first show 9/30/94 at Oak Mtn). I was going to do this show solo. Drove down, no nap today. Grabbed a bite eat and strolled in early. All 3 nights I was dead center, more or less, of the soundboard.
Band comes on and bam, a monster Diner picking up with that old school feeling from the previous nights. It continued on…
At this point I am going to start reading into shit more then it should probably be read into. Blackout is a band favorite, I have never understood the fan hate. Everyone has been there!
Holden kept the old school flavor and is special since one of my twin boys has that name. Coincidence? I like to think not…
More old school, Walk On! I love Neil Young and to have this with the rest of the Young songs over the past 4 shows was awesome.
Pickin is pickin and it’s a Mikey song, no piss break for me. So glad they brought Clinic Cynic back and recorded a studio version with Jimmy. Mikey WSP with a new flair.
Solid Rock was pretty rocked out and the first time the band really started to improvise in the first set. Yeah, Jimmy rocked some solos in Diner and what not but Solid Rock started to see the band get out there..
A great Thousage for this era, not my favorite song even back to the Houser days.
Classic finish to this set with the Machine>Barstools with Thank U Rap. That is the funk right there. Love the Barstools raps and JB's guitar work in the middle was astounding.
A solid first set with some great old tunes and some great reworked old tunes. Not as exploratory or adventurous as the other 1st sets from the run but a great time.
Second Set, met up with an upstanding member of the WSP community and watched the rest of the show together. The Cotton Was King caught me off guard as an opener. I dig the tune but was surprised they would open up the 2nd set of a 3 night run with it. I don’t let most of the new stuff get to me like others so I said OK, whats up next…..the ole switch’a’roooo…. another Disco the classic set opener. Then the band really started to pick up steam in terms of on stage communication and rockin’!
YSBG has morphed into a monster with Jimmy and was written around the same as my first born so the whole “Let her cry, let her cry, let her cry” is a running joke in my house.
Ahhhh, the Fairies Wear Boots, love me some Sabbath. If there was one song I could request at my 200th show this was it. Fucking BAD ASS into a great Jam! This was worth it all for me. What a great version on some old school heavy metal
Boom into St. Ex, one of the best post-Houser masterpieces! Wow this 2nd set is really picking up!
Bust it Big, holy fuck these guys aren’t messing around this is a 2nd set for the ages (yeah, yeah, yeah Sunday Red Rocks but I wasn’t there). Jimmy has been owning this song for the past several years.
They drop into Smokestack (personal fan of ole school blues so bad ass).
The Action Man was rockin’ and the crowd was going nuts. I will admit I miss the instrumental days but JB’s vocal work on this and throughout the weekend and week is really making some songs sound and feel spectacular as opposed to just going through the motions. The band was feeling it so it carried over to the crowd.
Then back into some older tunes. I like JJ songs so no problem with CTS. A running joke with my wife is how many times I have seen Blue Indian.
Another Porch Song but this time fast. Quite alright a classic Panic tune and I sing it to my 16 month old twins boys every night as I put them to bed.
Stuck around for the encore this time and was not disappointed. A moving version of City of Dreams. Postcard and Love Tractor will always be classics, here is a song to go Yeah Hah and Woooo too.

Quotes: The transition out of Stop go was something special and OMG the end of 1 x 1 Jimmy killed it! Jojo all over it tonight.
JB gets the show started off with an "express yourself!" to go along with the house music, and the band kicks it off with a rousing It Ain't No Use. Stop Go is sublime, with a sick transition into a nicely jammed out 1 x 1, and another possessed Me And The Devil Blues, with JB howling harmonies over Jimmy's devilish, soaring notes.Superb transition between a developed One Arm Steve jam into Who Do You Belong To?.
nto the show at 7:30 - started at 8:05, I think. My ticket for the 1st night was left side orch at the back so I went up to the center of the balcony instead where some friends had seats. Really the only bad seat in the house is ... the last 10 rows of the orch on the far left and right ... and it's pseudo general admission in there anyway.
First set highlights: Ain't No Use as an opener - nice choice. Didn't know it had been since '98 for an opener ... Stop/GO jam into 1x1 - very nice. Unfortunately the Tortured Artist > Devil > Last Straw may have gone on a wee too long - that's 3 dirge songs in a row in front of a crowd that's ready to whoop it up
Second set highlights: The all out jam between One Arm Steve into Who Do You Belong To might have been THE moment on a second set full of tasty jams - and I gotta say, I really do like that St. Louis wedge in the middle of Driving, especially when we get another song in there too (in this case ... Blight).
Here in Chainsaw City .. nice way to end the night.
Overall review: Well played, minimal flubbing, 1st set was a little slow ... let's call it average. There is little chance that this night is going to be the topper of the 3 nights, I believe.
Security turned out to be no problem. I don't know how it was downstairs, but on the balcony they were making no effort to clear the aisles or stop anything else going on - the two ushers "guarding" the center balcony had taken off their jackets and were DANCING through each set once they got into the 2nd or 3rd song - I got a kick out of that.
Best intentions to hit the Hutchens post-show as Southbound is literally around the corner from my place, but 7 hours worth of beer drinking had taken their toll and I hit the sack at 12:30 AM. Maybe tonight for local Talking Heads cover band Same As It Ever Was if I feel up to it at the end of the show.

BTD's notes: After JB wishes the Knoxville crowd good evenin' and announced that they'll be their band this evenin', they smoke up what's becoming a popular opening tune, and a wonderfully jammed out version of Holden Oversoul. There's no transition at all, with the song falling perfectly into Weak Brain, Narrow Mind. The concluding jam of Gimme consists of a Little Kin outro jam.
Night 2 of Knox. Hard to beat a Jack Sammie.
Yeah the Holden> weak brain was very nice, they hit a nice plateau right after the Holden jam and JB stepped up to the mic. As smooth as it gets.
Knoxville night 2: In the door at 7:30, show start again just after the 8:00 hour, right center orchestra towards the back.
Notable absence of police cars outside compared to last night - also apparently a harder ticket as some people with fingers up - there were a couple people with tickets at showtime outside (not apparently wanting to hand them to the finger pointers).
Start with a summary: This is the Widespread Panic ya know and love. It's a great set list, and was played with great energy - the band was could not stop smiling through the entire night. They get an 'A'.
And we'll award the MVP of the night to Dave Schools for taking over the Bowlegged jam and putting it off into Worry - Dave also got them off into Mr. Soul during Jack - how often you going to get a Jack sandwich as an encore? Dave was grinning ear to ear at the end of the show - JB was smiling and laughing with Jimmy - we get it - you nailed it
Highlights: The second half of the first set from Hatfield onward was sublime - really, really fantastic. Bowlegged > Worry jam, Hatfield, putting Little Kin in there late in the set - that worked really nice. BIG JAM out of Goin Out West ... Sharon > TYS > Walkin. JB could not remember the lyrics to Aunt Avis coming out of Disco - we'll let that go ... they had to come around to the head 3 times ...
Jack > Mr. Soul > Jack speaks for itself. (First ever split jack, Mr. Soul comes out of no where!)
If we're building a tower here, they have a whole LIST of giants they could pull out to really send this run off with a bang at the Wednesday night show.
I'm typing this at the kitchen table after getting out of bed at 10 AM. Going in to work from 11 to 5, then I'm taking my sig other/live-in GF out for a nice dinner before the show tonight.

good time overall last night. Sound was fucking horrible where we were. Up and down energy all night. Came out strong but mid 1st really dragged until the ending combo brought the crowd back to life. Freaks Come Out at Night and Theme from Rocky music set break was fun. 1st half of 2nd set was good but it just seemed a little flat. From Junior on though they were breathing fire. Junior, Ride Me High, North, and Parsons were all HUGE. Again, can't get over how bad the sound was but it could've been where we were sitting bottom level. Jimmy was turned up really really loud and it was hard to hear anybody or anything else. It's a huge room. 3rd level was completely tarped off, hardly no one on 2nd level. 1st level and floor completely packed. The lights were great. Good times. Pre-gamed for a good 4 hrs at Blues City back bar. Was ready for bed after the show. I'm an old. Cheers!
042602 Review:
didn't see alot of details posted about last night's show, so I thought I might throw a couple quick thoughts out there for anyone who cares..
Great venue. Much superior to last week's parking lot imo. Breeze coming off the water was nice.
Greta>Porch - had big potential to be a great way to really kick things off right with a 20 minute jamwich, but the actual execution left much to be desired. Greta jam was very short relatively speaking before they slowed things way down for an obvious transition. Greta jam was so short that I thought they might jam back into Greta after Porch for a proper ending. Nah.. Porch was perfunctory with no lunar. Ouch.
Cynic - standard
Airplane>Jaded>INA - nice takeoff, but not over the top, before finding a more or less standard jaded. Jaded seems to have so much potential (see reno), but doesn't appear to be one they feel confident to go out there on yet. wish they fucking would. just sayin.. INA was a treat as always, with some nice, subtle soloing by Jimmy.
WOTF, Provin - I like both tunes, but just saw em last w/e, and the readings were par. Provin buildup>release wasn't as crazy as it can be.
ATL>CTS - gonna be honest and say I'm pretty burnt on these 2, so I grumbled loudly for sure when I heard someone hinted ATL during the tuneup. ATL can be really good these days when they step on the jam, and we finally get lucky and they hit it hard on the closing jam. This tells me it isn't the closer, hallelujah, as they chug into CTS (much to my chagrin!). No big closing jam here, but the middle jam before the ending verses was very cool. If I remember correctly, it seems like they took it in a little different direction than the norm, and things got real interesting there for a few mins. Excited to hear the playback on that, which I can't believe I just typed that. There are good CTS, but usually it's a big closing jam pushing it over the top.
I look at my watch and see it is 60 mins on the nose and I can't help glaring at my wife as I comment on the overall weakness, relatively speaking of course, of the previous frame.
Ribs - standard at best. I have seen a couple good versions of this recently, but this one didn't ever get cookin.
Tallboy - not what I'm looking for to start the set, but much like some of the atl>cts shenanigans, I'm pleasantly surprised as this gets hitting very nicely during the outtro. Any song is good with a hot jam tacked on and tallboy is no exception.
Suad>impossible>chilly>drums>entering a blackhole backwards>maggot>chilly>surprise>pilgrims - I am a big fan of suad, as the middle jam always seems to get dave and jimmy throwing out their hottest licks, so I was glad when jimmy cued it up. Dave and Jimmy didn't disappoint, as they locked in and laid it down heavy. Jimmy gave the obvious signal for Impossible coming out and that seemed to finally get the crowd back into it (as it should). Impossible was well done, with sunny beatin the hell out of it and the front line rippin it up. As they wound that down Dave started throwing out the EABHB riffs. He quoted it for quite a bit, much like Vegas, before he finally gave the obligatory call for Chilly. Pretty standard pounding on that before Jimmy wove his way into Maggot Brain (no spoken word intro). I miss Mike on this one, but I think Jimmy does a great job with it as well, with his best mournful licks and runs. Very nice. >chilly>surprise was good, but it's always good, before slowing down and drifting into Pilgrims. This was my 10th repeat from last w/e, so I was hoping for something different (though I love pilgrims), and then they didn't really peak it out like they usually do. One of my favorite songs, but a boilerplate reading unfortunately.
The set had it moments, but it won't be one the sets we are sitting there talking about at NYE if you know what I mean.
BLMFYD - WOW. THIS is what I came to see. Band crushes the ever-living-dogshit out of this, with JB growling, leaning and boot kickin his way through as the band hits it out of the park. One of my fave covers of the year so far. Thanks guys, I needed that to get me home.
ALG - no jam, yawn
I had a great time and was happy I went, but performance wise, all things considered, this was a standard night at the office for the band. There will be plenty of heat next w/e, so bring it on!

Entropy Review: http://entropy4205.blogspot.com/2011/10/another-night-in-memphis-review-wp.html
JB Gives thanks to the crowd for the Sunday show and the band gets off to a psychedelic start, with a mechanical rumble leading into the second Saint Ex in the opening slot.
BTD's notes: The unpredictability of arena sound....
Memphis Set 2 was Sickkkk. Memphis is a great ass music city.
I LOVE Memphis, such a great representation of the OLD SOUTH.
Great show, great venue, great people. Memphis just jumped to the lead on my favorite cities of the south east list.
High Points: In the show itself FIxen, heroes, band suite and the entire second set. Encore was perfect.h
Beale street = classy bourbon street? (LG4WSP)
"venue was packed on the floor and all the way up to the upper deck but no one was upstairs. probably the largest attendance show all tour was memphis (~8000 seems about right w a 5K floor). Im going to post a full review later tonight, but in short it was the best memphis show since 11-24-01. The band nod (ophelia>shape) was the highlight of the night for me, also some sweet booker T (fixin and green onions) nods throughout the show. not sure what show that "GOUGEaway" was at but the sound was on point to me. usually it is a bit loud in arena, but hey its rock and roll. Of the whole weekend ttown>memphis>biloxi , i would choose memphis overall . but the whole run this weekend was a blast. Full review w/ pictures to come."
3rd level closed curtains ,but bottom 8,000 imo
Interestingly enough, the interpreter from Red Rocks was there helping out. Show was a blast - - YSBG actually blew me away, very funky bass and Jimmy ripped it apart.
Heroes > Space Wrangler > Ophelia > The Shape I'm In -- was an obvious highlight, the place went nuts.
Throughout -- Radio Child > Machine > Barstools and Dreamers > You Should Be Glad > Junior > Jam > Drums > Ride Me High -- they just didn't give us a chance to take a breath! Great times and good people. The people in our section (behind the soundboard a few rows up) rocked. Thanks folks, it's always a pleasure!
Set 1 was so so, more or the rock n roll set, few rushed moments. Set 2 was amazing, loved the JR > RM High Jam> Riders tease > Drumz > RM High > Blue Indian! Loved that. It wasn't the crazy breakout nt, but a good show.
the sounds was fucking terrible. worst I've ever heard at any major concert ever. Every instrument was to 9 or 10, the reverb was coming off the roof like thunder, the vocals were at 4 or 5, and sounded like they were coming through a tin can, there was no clarity or distinction in the instruments. the show was decent, but the sound really pissed me off. Kings of Fucking Leon did a better job with the sound there in April.
Honestly, I would've been pissed the fuck off if I travelled for that muddy mix of a mess that they called "sound" last night.
On the other hand, Memphis was great all around. The city, scene, and show were awesome. As for my 1st time in Memphis, it was great to hang out on Beale St. and go see Widespread Panic steps away. There's definitely no place like Beale St. Also, as far as the southern-fried hotties, I'd have to say Memphis took it. I was disappointed in the Bama attendance. I would definitely love to get back to a Memphis show, especially the Forum right by Beale St.

BTD: Jimmy lends a delicate touch to the backend, 'Breathing Slow' jam out of a tasteful, standalone 'Driving Song'. Jimmy's epic, soaring, cascading, 30 second note in Papa's Home! I say goddamn! Frosty is gettin' fatter.
http://entropy4205.blogspot.com/2011/10/another-night-in-memphis-review-wp.html
I honestly believe that this show posseses all of the crown jewels:
1.) Beautiful seuges
2.) High Octaine Energy
3.) Classis Panic environment - Pristine sunset over the coast headed into venue
4.) A frothy in tune John Bell - His vocals were gloriously soaring (i.e. CFMWH)
5.) Disco > Diner > Driving
I have never been a huge fan of post-Mikey Give but Jimmy hammers the Give set closer. The Disco could not have been more timely. JoJo & Jimmy out of the Papa's pinnacle are spectacular. Jimmy's solos out of the first half of Driving honestly get better with every single show. 2011 Panic is a serious force and they displayed the great strides in cohesivness in Biloxi. I am so grateful I was able to attend this show. I had great hopes for Tuscaloosa but song selection was a serious problem for me. Although the show was well played. The transition out of the Maggot > Chilly is perfecto. The Suprise was beautiful as well. JOJO leading the way into the back side was very nice with the River breeze piercing the floor!! Good ole classic Panic was delivered but I wanted Biloxi in Tuscaloosa! Either way it was a perfect weekend. Biloxi is a force to be reckoned with!!!
"Never miss a Sunday show. Like church, but better"
Attendance was Big enough to have them sell out of beer by set break...
The Coast coliseum was set for Theater Seating, same as they did the year Panic played UNO mid-October, and understimated the demand for cold beverages as by setbreak the beer was hard to find!
However this time, the crowd was VERY MUCH into the show and the band responded appropiately. Nothing was rushed, all the songs were extremely well played with extended jams, and you could FEEL the band was hitting on all cylinders. Impressive show, great crowd energy and the crowd was rewarded. A fitting salute before the hiatus for those of us who won't see them again this tour.
Amazing show tonight. One of my highlight, suprisingly was...Bears > PD....sickness! The Thin Air, Stop Go, and Diner went forever.....just what i wanted! Lots of great jams. Also really loved the Extended Breathin Slow > Pigeons.
2 very good nights, 1 great night.
Such an amazing time, driving thru Bama, Tenn, and Miss. Blue Skies and great weather. Also fun meeting alot of fellow PTers.
The Phrase I heard the most: Roll Tide
The setup for this was weird. They had this "festival" going on w/ camping that had an official tax'd vendor area for shakedown. Wasn't really poppin, people were nervous.
Inside the show was a 100% free for all. Floor was raging superhard, and everyone kept looking back at the stands because they were jumping big time. A few doofus security guards around, didn't accomplish shit.
Many many starry eyes at setbreak, pretty great vibe in my book. Some of the tourheads were complaining about locals but I guess I just knew what to expect in Biloxi. The vibe for me was blissful, especially after Memphis.
FUCK FEDEX FORUM. That is a super sketchy venue, and I will never go back there for any show again. Every corporate venue rule you can imagine was in full effect. Security guards were following me around all night on the floor and I was absolutely not doing shit. Cameras and cops doing lookout from up top sending headset goons to snatch them up from the crowd, saw several people get in trouble.
The vibe, in my mind, was menacing and it was hard for me to let go and be into the music 100%..
Having that show there instead of Mud Island seemed like a set up. Memphis sketched me the fuck out bad. To get onto Beale Street after the show you have to be searched hard!! I'm sure some forgetful WSP fans ended up in handcuffs.
Highlights of last night: Bears>PDSM , Thin Air, STOP/GO, DINER.......the whole show was smoking but those were some insane peaks. They went pretty far out, my face was 100% melted after being at two great shows that weekend.
I have to say, that ....BEAR'S GONE FISHIN > Jam > PD/SM, was some insane Thunder down on the Bayou! Hot damn.

BTD's notes: It's safe to say that the low country has been a breeding ground for ripping shows, and with the road crew pulling into Johnny Mercer, Savannah will not be spared tonight! They set the bar for solid transitioning early with a ripping segueway between the B of D > Bowlegged Woman opener, and then again between Bust It Big & Mr. Soul (the first 3 songs brought to you by the letter B). SLAM! All that is followed by the 3rd Gimme on Tuesday in a row, and a Grateful Dead sounding jam into Little Kin. A surprise with Old Neighborhood coming in the encore slot (2nd only). 2nd set highlights include a schools echoing over the crowd to end blight, a slick Spoonful, and a monster Schools solo during Hatfield. Second Arleen Sandwich in a row, this time wrapped inside an insane Tie Your Shoes, complete with "Love Your Squirells" lyrics. (check this) The age old debate between ARLENE and ARLEEN is now over, with Dave Schools spelling it out for y'all at Savannah's rowdy Johnny Mercy Auditorium.
The segues the first nite in savannah were fantastic
Panic crushed a first set.
"Eye of the Tiger. Place going nuts. So am I. Out."
Jimmy Stuck the landing out of 'Blight'
"That's some 5th gear panic right there" Tie Your Shoes > Arleen > Tie Your Shoes
"The crowd was going nuts from start to finish!"
"Full on party last night. Great vibe, first set is straight smoke.

peep that Jam>Mercy!!!! the GOW too.
Great funk jams in there, good lord. Just now listening since the show, i dont remember it being like that.
Hit me with more Fall tour funk
Biggest surprise of the first set, believe it or not, was Up All Night! Yeah, the Savannah lines makes it a given, but a wonderfully developed and beautifully melodic jam in the middle of the song was a first! As if Imititation Leather Shoes wasn't dark enough already, Schools let's the bass line dip into 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' for a few minutes. Check out the Surprise Valley Outro. Beautiful, silky smooth outro on the vacation jam.
All Houser era songs in the second set and encore.

that was the most females I have seen at a Panic show in quite sometime too...... and to get the only Sharon played, not during a 2-3 night run and as an encore, was pretty badass, esp. with Johnny Neel sitting in.
Carefully built in the middle of the woods, secluded yet close to downtown; i'm in love. Hopefully this venue brings more great music to our city.
hat Porch Song>Low Spark sandwich was one of the better segments of music I've heard.
"That porch jam was hot"
"Random Sharon"
Jam out of Porch > Low Spark was worth the price of admission. Madness. So glad to know Nashville has this wonderful lil nugget of a venue. Superb venue.
" Beautiful Scenery. Security was almost non-existent. I imagine this what Oak Mtn may have been prior to 2002." everything was easy there! parking, food (real), no bathroom lines (i did sue the woods more than the restrooms), beer lines, ease of getting around, no security hassles, courteous staff, and most important the surroundings
The boys were saving room for a huge second set, with none of the songs going too far out there during the 60 minute first set that featured a rowdy Cream Puff War.
He was tearing that rug up, grunting, growling, howling and spilling energy all over the place. Love to see him feel it like that as it translates so well in to wild vibes in the crowd. Another smoking hot encore and JB was fun to watch...

BTD Notes: Panic is clearly showing love for the home team, All Time Low kicks things off for the ATL...
Absolutely beautiful version of This Part Of Town with Jimmy and Keane trading licks and blowing it up!
2nd set was HOT... place was bumping! Possibly one of the best sets I've seen. JK was perfect on TPOT. Flewzy and DBD were fucking awesome and everything seemed to be on point. JH didn't miss a lick all night!
Hot hot hot!
First off, the weather in Alpharetta couldn't have been any better...always helps to have a lot of sunshine in the lot to set the vibe (imo)..
All Time Low was a good opener...unusual in this spot for sure but a good version and appropriate to kick off the night....ROCK! I said in the lot I wanted to hear and BAM! I enjoyed this version and at this point I'm thinking this could be a special night...
This was only my 4th show since Oak 02' so Tickle the Truth went over my head...I enjoyed it but it didn't blow me away...that can be said for Dyin' Man and St. Ex...although the Dyin' Man was fun...a lot of folks going nuts down in the first few rows. I enjoy the "sabbath" feeling to parts of St. Ex...well played imo. I could hear the Impossible getting charged up and they brought the heat with the > Guilded...many years and many shows and I can't rembember the last time I heard this in a first a set...if ever. Good stuff on that combination...I ran and grabbed a few beers during the end of Katie and Radio Child although I think they played both songs well...HPD was ROCKING and a fitting way to end the 1st set...
Machine > Barstools...lions, tigers, bears OH MY! That combo got it going quick and it was a full on dance fest on row H Houser side!! I don't mind Good People and I thought is sounded good...kinda funky...good version. Holy crap FFF was hoppin'...crowd going nuts...great version and everybody is moving good at this point...was very suprised to get a DBD and JB just kills the vocals on this tune...I had some Houser thoughts during this one and it was beautiful...The same can be said for TPOT...JB's vocals on this tune are damn good and again, kind of took me back a few years...solid version.....Flicker went over my head like the Tickle but I did enjoy it and the jam at the end was hot...always love to get a Papa's Home and the crowd was loving it > drums > beer...back into Papa's....good stuff. I figured they might give us a Driving and I was right...good start to this one and then BAM! Superstition??? Are you serious? the place went absolutely bonkers...my row included...a Drivin Super Drivin Sammy...I'm satisfied!!....> Breathing slow...only the second time in probably 100 or so shows I've heard this tune...I really couldn't believe it to tell you the truth...really good version and I enjoyed the shit out of it!! > Chilly Water....I've made no mistake about declaring my love for Houser Panic over the years and I will say that this was one of the better Chilly Water's I've ever heard....the place was coming unglued...I thought JB was going to come out of his britches
The encore COD of was very fitting and a good version...I thought it might be one and done and then Tractor...a lot energy on this one and a good version....wheew!
John Keane was a pleasant surprise on TPOT and DBD....I came away from this show with a smile on my face....thank you Widespread Panic!

Really nasty drop in between Party At Your Mama's House and Stop Breakin' Down Blues.
Nastiest build up in Tie Your Shoes... Smoking hot. Then Sunny drops a loop on the drums after Tie Your Shoes (THIS SHOULD BE LISTED ON SETLIST)
It was an unbelievably well played show. David Schools was in dominant form. Beautiful theatre, and security was a joke. Re-entry was totally allowed, you just had to get a stamp. I went out to the car twice for a beer. One time I walked right in with a can without even trying to hide it. I got away with not buying a single beer in that place. And didn't use their restrooms once either. Before Rebirtha Schools smiled and did a little baseball swing. Then busted into the song. Then someone threw a Cards jersey at JB and it whizzed by his ear.
"So we hear you guys got a pretty good baseball team" DAS Before 'Aint Life Grand' encore
Rebirtha had a big cheer cus someone threw a red Cards hat on stage and the cheers were let out during I'm Not Alone with St. Louis took it home.
Show coincides with Game 3 of the NLCS at home. This could be interesting.
Up All Night gets the jam treatment once again....
Epic tension release before Love Your Girl section of Tie Your Shoes. Booming Entering a Black Hole Backwards jam out of drums before Chilly Water.

When you coming home seems mighty appropriate for JB's return to Akron. On top of that, STrange Times cover (Black Keys singer's home town) and Let's Get The Show On The Road (MIchael Stanley).
They stop and drop into a beautifully crafted jam out of LGTSOTR, leading back into Driving Song.
Akron first set was solid, the second set was fucking Panic. I really appreciated the Me & the Devil as i figured that was done for the tour. Driving song started with JB on electric > power-driven LGTSOTR > driving song with JB on acoustic > pretty standard BS > steller Surprise Valley. The venue was the real deal. Much like a 50% size version of the Palace. Absolutely beautiful. Its really a shame Panic never had the opportunity to put together a 2 or 3 nighter there. I would put Det at about 1100-1200, nearly the whole balcony was empty and Akron was quite close to being sold out. I should note, 2 completely different crowds as well, alot of Panic Fans in akron as opposed to locals checking them out for the first time. (Listen to 10/15)

BTD's Notes: Jojo Synthesizer jam after Drums.
Drove in from KC, got right downtown, got front row tix behind the pit, right in front of Schools. Had a couple stevies at Jazz and headed to the theater. Beautiful place! Last year I was in the balcony so it was fun being up front this year. House music hi-lite, Hot Pants...I'm Coming - Bobby Byrd.
Glory was a solid opener, not sure I've ever seen it in that slot. Straight into Ribs with Dave hammering away was very nice. My buddy had only been to 4 shows and he wanted Bears and got it. Proving got things ready to blow but it didn't really happen first set. ILS is fun live, but was standard. Back to proving then the unmistakable Sonny intro to Casa. I knew I'd get this song so wasn't too surprised. St. Louis was welcome, thought they might save it for Milwookie during the World series. I'd never seen SU&D and it was pretty solid southern rock. I always like blue indian so was happy to get it, the end of that song got the place rowdy, coupled with a holden closer, great finishing touch!
Went to get a water during set break to get ready for the drive home and couldn't even get through the drink line at the front. It was crazy. House lights went off so I sprinted back without water to my spot to find two dudes in their 50's in our spot. Took a while but we worked our way back in with a totally different crowd than we'd had first set.
One arm steve wasnt bad, my friend dug it too. Love the jam into Pleas, feel like Jimmy is finally nailing it. During the jam I took the time to look around and watch the pit. Dude jumped the rail into the pit and had a skinny security guard in his 40's run over and grab him. Guy spun away four times before the guy got pissed and grabbed his arm, took him over to the other security and gave the umpire toss signal. Was pretty funny. Spun chicks kept banging into him, he didn't look happy. So I called him over and asked him what's the craziest crowd he sees in the place. He points to the floor indicating "THIS" and mouths the words "by a lot!" and makes a wide gap with his hands. Thought it was pretty funny.
Christmas Katie was tight, Lil Kin is always a favorite of mine. Gimme was a good toast to a great Tuesday show. Worry was hot but the steam died in drums until the end when it got funky with bass. Impossible was awesome coming out of that jam. Highlight of the night was definitely Ride me High, got the crowd around me going wild. Somehow that song took the place to a new level. Pilgrims was classic panic, loved it. Knew CPW had to be coming soon since they soundchecked a couple nights ago. Two awesome closers for the night.
Pretty solid encore, nothing crazy but I'll always take some JoJo and Wrangler for the road.
Had a lot of fun with the different people we met. Katelyn from Lincoln, Jeff, Angela, Georgia...can't remember the rest of the names.
Hope you guys get some heaters in Milwaukee! Tell Nyjer Morgan hi while I'm watching the CARDS in the World Series!
Set 2 One Arm Steve > Pleas > JAM > Christmas Katie, Lil Kin > Gimme > Worry > Drumz & Bass > Impossible > Ride Me High > Pilgrims > Cream Puff War (83 mins)
Encore Help Me Somebody > Space Wrangler (13 mins)
Thought the show started off wirth a nice bang. Was with a buddy who was gettin his cherry popped and he really wanted a Ribs so that didn't take long. Thought the Proving sammy was real nice and the crowd was definitely groovin. Had a nice piss/cig session during Casa and timed it perfect to hear the opening notes for St. Louis which I love. Holden closed out the set with a bang. OAS was good but got real excited with the jam into Pleas as it's one of my faves. Got Please last year in Omaha too. CK, Kin, and Gimme were all great but Worry is when the show took off for me. After another piss/cig during drums I was ready for the bust into Impossible. Show was straight fire I thought from there on out. My section was gettin the fuck down all night! Really enjoyed the encore as well.
Personally highlight: Impossible>RMH(peak of the night)>Pilgrims>CPW
Quote of the night: That show was reeeal niiiice Clark.... that show was reeeeaaaal niiiiice

BTD's notes:
Just a week out from the tour closer in Chicago, perhaps the boys decided to stack the setlist tonight to bring hits like '' back into rotation one more time!
Rebirtha concludes with a very developed stretch of improv.
They finally
$4 PBR Tall Boys in the brew city make Blackout Blues the most appropriate choice to end the longest show of the tour a satisfying note... but they're staying on stage... for 'Dear Mr. Fantasy'!
Fans have come to expect a ton of jamming and long distance sets in MKE, so the marathon tonight!
5 Instrumentals. (4/10 original Instrumentals and Maggot Brain)

BTD's NOTES: Some tripped out synth effects at the end of Red Hot Mama (?).
loved the end of set 1: Straw > YgY > Fishwater!
Junior opener is one song that can really get it started right for me. They played the hell out of Cotton was King. It's usually a song I don't get super excited about hearing but this show *put a new light on it.*
Trouble>last straw>you got yours>fishwater really made the set special to me.*
The take off jam out of airplane gets better every time I hear it and is giving new life to the song compared with the first times I heard Jimmy play it. *The jams outta drums have been taking on new meaning and I think they are getting back to the way they used to do it.*
Low spark is always a highlight in my book.*
I don't know how everybody felt about the slow encore but I think they are great when they polish it off with a Red Hot Mama.*
Major highlight:Drumz/Bass > Arleen-like Jam > Greta > Jam > Low Spark > Papas. Also enjoyed Sometimes > Conrad....i got that combo at the Warfield Run I did in 1999. What memories. Great couple of nights in Milwaukee!
What a party last night was. Second set was a straight heater. Airplane > Goin out west had some absolutely ridiculous Jimmy jams... Low Spark > Papas was a lot of fun as well, then saw JBs tech bring the mandolin out so ALG was coming. First 2 encore songs were a change of pace from the high energy of that set, RHM was awesome. Props to the light guy because he's been putting out some great stuff this tour, that place was just red all over.
See ya folks tonight for what's bound to be an absolute barn burner!!

Breathing Slow from Milwaukee was badass. Jimmy's tone was very clean, reminiscent of the '09 "acoustic" set!
Highlights night 3:
Maybe some of you have had this happen before but it seemed like the boys had a wire at our table at moe's that day because they just about played every song we really talked about that day. My friend Corree and I just kept turning to each other saying you have got to be kidding me. Stop breakin' down> PAYMH>no sugar> Aunt Avis was the highlight if the first set to me. The whole second set was just awesome but the part that really stood out to me and I couldn't get out of my head after the show the the surprise>driving>breathing slow>surprise $5 footlong. I think Jimmy is really nailing the change from driving into breathing slow. They saved the best part of the night for last. Genesis>Postcard>Lawyers guns & money encore!!! Are you kidding me. This was my favorite encore of the weekend by far and left me with a good taste in my mouth when we left the wookie!*
So it's been a few days since I was on here, and I'm not quite sure if this run sucked or not….but if you ask me, Night 3 was fucking outstanding. No crazy bustouts (or even non-crazy bustouts), this was just a well played rock show where even the standardly-played had an extra twist or 'umph' to it.
Some things that stood out, musically:
-Jojo's work on the piano in the outro of PAYMH turning into a funky No Sugar intro
-I kept thinking there were more sammy's happening - was POSITIVE ANU & Radio Child weren't finished , but apparently they were.
-Loved the C Brown. Jimmy's solos in here have a tendency to get bogged down, where a simple melodic one will do, but I thought this version was great.
-Blight>Pigeons>Bust It Big was the Big Ticket.
-Surprise>Driving>Valley>Climb to Safety wasn't exactly out of left field as setlist choices, but it was crushed
-The 2 Surprise outros I caught this fall - Brooklyn & Milwaukee - have not disappointed.
-Encore was fantastic and I think everyone in attendance agreed.
-This was my first Postcard since the Beacon in 2001 and I damn sure agree with the band about the city of Milwaukee, great place.

BTD's notes: JB is in rare form tonight, mixing up the lyrics and having a whole lot of fun with Charlie during the most colorful Hatfield rap of the tour. A North of epic proportions highlights the first set, which is followed by a funky jam in E that flows beautifully into Jack.
I really wanna compare these two shows because they were so different. The Minneapolis show was a total rock fest with a lot of heavy Jimmy solos. A total face melter
Highlights for me from the Minneapolis show were don't wanna loss you and guilded. Along with the solid rock>rock encore! Sweet!*

BTD: One of the most polished St. Louis jams to date, a very emotionally charged stretch in Mercy >>>>Vacation, with some beautiful jamming and JB talking about Dust, Wind and Light both in Mercy and Vacation. Space Wrangler had a huge outro!
. Ames was alot more mellow than the Minneapolis face melter... almost somber at times which was appropriate considering the death of the tour bus driver.*
Highlights from Ames were the Hope in a Hopeless World, Pleas>mr. Soul opener. Such a flawless jam from pleas into mr. Soul. To me this whole set flowed really nicely. I enjoyed the hell out of the Bear's Gone Fishin'...it has taken me a little time to get into the song but now I love it. To me the song has to distinct layers...there is the this light layer on top and these slower moving deep notes on the bottom. Other highlight for me was new speedway, travelin man>vacation. Traveling' man is the perfect set up for a great vacation.*

BTD's notes: Incredible well crafted 2nd set of fire! The slow outro of Saint Ex that would have followed a massive cracendo, was subbed out for the lead lines to Stop Go. And what a Stop Go, it was! Absolutely beautiful wine making rap, incredible Jojo delay jam hinting at Grateful Dead, and then Papa's Home had the most beautiful Jimmy solo!
Highlights for me was Send Your Mind....awesome opener. Another good up all night. The whole second set was rockin but the TYS>not fade away jam>drums>TYS>ride me high was my favorite part. The encore's speak for themselves. Wow!*
Friday: Got in early to get a poster-- best theatre I have ever been in. Started off good. After coming from MKE the crowd energy was a little low, but the band started strong. Machine > Barstools was top notch. The second set had some of my favorite songs. My only complaint was that TYS sort of fell apart but the rest of the set was great. Strong close and a rocking encore. Fun show.

I could talk about this show for days but this thing is getting really lengthy so this is the brief version
Me and the devil blues-holy shit I never thought I would see this and it blew me away
She Caught The Katy-my first and I loved it waited 49 shows to see it
Greta-never heard energy from the crowd like I heard during this greta. Everyone was going nuts!!*
Arleen blood and fire rap-thanks Dgold for the background info I couldn't tell what he was saying.*
Peace Frog > Blue Sunday, End Of The Show, Ain't Life Grand encore left me speechless. JB's voice is just incredible. I still can't believe this encore.*
Saturday: The show kicked ass. GOW opener rocks. MATDB, YGY, LIR were great as well as the Conrad closer. The second set started as standard Panic (which isn't bad this tour) but after the Airplane jam it was almost a completely different show. Greta tore the theatre apart and the energy never left. The best Panic 3.0 I've seen. Fishwater was out of hand. Killer Driving and the best Arlene I've heard in some time. PF>BS got the crowd into a frenzy (more than UNO '98) and it was great hearing it again but in Chicago. Bumped into Todd after the show and he was all smiles.

Most Dave Schools songs in 1 show???
just wanna say first off, how trippy and cool was it watchin JB sing songs like surprise valley and blue Indian in that Halloween costume.*
So I got the feeling that some people were not enthusiastic about the obscure nature of some of the covers from this show. Personally I thought they were cool as hell. I loved the bluesy songs wishbone and taildragger....being a MS delta girl i love the blues. I loved the bust out Vic tune Degenerate>blight.*
I will never forget the look on my husbands face when he turned to me and said...."they're about to fuckin sandwich Godzilla!!!!!" Godzilla>ironman>Godzilla was a monster. Sadly I don't remember alot about I'm losing You and I haven't gone back to listen to the shows yet. *I'm sure some of you have some thoughts on it though.*
Wilco being a Chicago band, outta mind(outta sight) made sense*
The band could not have picked a better way to close a tour. Bringing all the crew out there to do Werewolves was really just icing on the cake!!!*
BTDs Notes: Anyone who's been to a show on Halloween knows it's more like Panic Christmas than anything, with all the surprises set up on the stage, and everyone in costume, anticipating the opener. Widespread Panic threw some haymakers to kick of the second set, rocking the Black Sabbath classic 'Iron Man' in FINE FASHION, with JB dressed in metal!
Halloween: Didn't have any expectations other than the soundcheck songs (Wishbone, Godzilla, and Ironman). They played them all. My 9th Halloween run and was ready for about anything. The first set was fun. I really liked all of the covers-- it set the tone for the evening doing both slower and harder songs as well. First set picked up during Tractor and was strong to the end.
It was a treat to see Godzilla again. My all time favorite cover from the old days. The place was going off. The rest of the set was rocking hard. Probably the most consistant set of the weekend. The encore was another massive Halloween series. New cover then a perfectly executed Postcard and a Porch. The Werewolves set us all out with a rocker. Good times.
